A question to Protestants: why do you consider icons to be idolatry and at the same time not consider paintings and photos as such?

The title. If you think that Exodus 20:3-5 means that one can not have icons, why doesn't it also mean that one shouldn't have paintings and photos? Thanks.

edit: I really couldn't get it, but now I've heard the reasons. By the way, in Orthodox theology, icons are not given supernatural qualities of their own. We believe that God works the miracles, and that it is His will for miracles to be manifested through icons. Prayer is to God and to His saints, and icons are here to help us.
